Dota matchmaking rating numbers

The next major update will add a ranked matchmaking feature to the game. This mode is aimed at experienced players who want to play in a more competitive environment and know their matchmaking rating MMR. Dota 2 matchmaking has always calculated MMR and used it to form matches; in ranked matchmaking we make that MMR visible. Dota 2 uses standard techniques to quantify and track player skill. We assign each player an MMR, which is a summary metric that quantifies your skill at Dota 2. After each match, we update your MMR based on what happened in that match.

Valve obliged users who play in rating matches to tie the phone number to the account. Developers also removed rating matches from some servers and made changes to the algorithm for selecting players. You need to do this before May 4th. If the phone number is not tied to the account before then, it will be impossible to play ranking matches until the phone is tied. You can replace the number, but the number deleted from the account can not be added to another account within three months. The minimum time limit will be several hours, the maximum — four days.

The first major change is that players must register a unique phone number to their account in order to queue for Ranked matches. Players using multiple accounts create a negative matchmaking experience at all skill brackets, so our goal is to add just enough friction to this process that the number of players doing this will be noticeably reduced. Having more players using their primary accounts will have a positive effect on both Ranked and Unranked Matchmaking. There will be a two-week grace period from today during which players have time to register a number, but starting on May 4th, accounts without a registered number will no longer be eligible for Ranked play. If a phone number is removed from an account after registration, a new number can be added, but there will be a three-month waiting period before the removed number can be registered on a new account.
